Spring is a busy time in Melbourne. In 2026, Australia’s first NFL regular-season game lands at the MCG on 11 September, followed by the AFL Grand Final on 26 September. October brings PAX Aus, the Melbourne Marathon, spring racing and two major festivals, then Cup Week takes us into November.
If one of these events is bringing you to Melbourne, this guide will help you sort out the dates, venues and where to stay. We’ve focused on events people are likely to travel for, whether you’re coming from interstate, regional Victoria or overseas.

Found the event that’s bringing you to Melbourne? Look at the full visit before searching for a stay. A Friday morning kick-off might mean arriving on Thursday, while an early warm-up or late finish can make getting there and back a big part of the decision.
What’s On In Melbourne In September
September starts at full pace. Australia’s first NFL regular-season game comes to the MCG, Grand Final week takes over the city and the Melbourne Royal Show opens its gates. Rod Laver Arena has a busy month too, and Melbourne Fringe gets under way before September is out.
The NFL Comes To Melbourne
Friday 11 September will look a little different around the MCG. The Los Angeles Rams take on the San Francisco 49ers at 10.35 am AEST in the first NFL regular-season game played in Australia, according to the MCG’s official announcement.
The game falls in the middle of the NFL Kickoff Festival, which runs at Melbourne Park from Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 September. If you’re making the trip for the game, it’s worth looking at the full festival program and turning it into a few days in Melbourne rather than one morning at the MCG.
The 10.35 am kick-off matters if you’re travelling from interstate. Arriving on Thursday gives you time to settle in and enjoy the festival without relying on a flight landing before the game. Confirm the latest entry details with the organisers and buy tickets through the official ticket agent.
AFL Grand Final Week
Grand Final week is hard to miss in Melbourne. The 2026 AFL Grand Final is set for Saturday 26 September at the MCG, although we won’t know who’s playing until later in the finals.
Fremantle supporters have more reason than most to keep a close eye on September. Freo finished the home-and-away season on top of the ladder, but that doesn’t lock in a Grand Final spot. If you’re coming over from WA and keen to follow them to Melbourne, keep an eye on the official AFL fixture and look at flexible accommodation while the finals play out. The same goes for anyone backing an interstate side that’s still in the hunt.
There’s plenty happening beyond the footy that week. Noah Kahan plays Rod Laver Arena from 25 to 29 September, the Melbourne Royal Show is under way and Melbourne Fringe begins on 29 September. It’s a very good excuse to stretch a Grand Final trip into a few days in Melbourne.
Melbourne Royal Show
The Melbourne Royal Show runs from Thursday 24 September to Sunday 4 October at Melbourne Showgrounds. The 11-day program covers Grand Final weekend and the Victorian school holidays.
Some people will be heading in for a family day at the Show. Others will be showing animals, competing or working there across several days. Start with the program for your date, then find out which gate you need and how the event-day transport is running. Don’t assume last year’s trip will work the same way in 2026.
September Concerts And Melbourne Fringe
September is a big month for live music at Rod Laver Arena:

Melbourne Fringe begins on 29 September and runs until 18 October, with more than 450 theatre, comedy, music, cabaret and other events. Fringe is all over town, so look up each venue before deciding where to stay.

October is packed if you’re into games, running, live music or racing. The weekend of 10 and 11 October is particularly busy, with PAX Aus, the Melbourne Marathon, Games Week and Melbourne Fringe all under way. Later in the month come the jazz festival, major arena shows and four big Saturdays of spring racing.

PAX Aus And Melbourne International Games Week
Melbourne International Games Week runs from 3 to 11 October. Its final weekend includes PAX Aus at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October.
PAX is worth making a weekend of. It stays open until 11.30 pm on Friday and Saturday, although the expo hall closes at 6 pm. Check the current schedule and badge collection details before you travel so you know when you need to be at MCEC.
MCEC is in South Wharf. If you’ll be there for two or three days, plan how you’ll get there and back from the home you’re considering. After a full day at PAX, you’ll be glad you looked at the trip home as well as the trip in.
Melbourne Marathon Weekend
The Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival runs across Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October. Events start on Batman Avenue near Rod Laver Arena and finish in the MCG precinct.
For runners, race weekend starts well before the gun goes off. There’s bib collection, the runners expo and an early alarm to think about. Supporters have their own Melbourne morning to organise, whether they’re carrying the bag, finding a viewing spot or arranging where to meet at the finish.
The marathon shares the weekend with PAX Aus, Games Week and Melbourne Fringe. It’s a great weekend to be in Melbourne, but people in the same group may be heading to different parts of the city at different times. Look at everyone’s start and finish times before choosing where to stay.
Spring Racing In October
Four major race days fall on four Saturdays in a row:
- Caulfield Guineas Day, Saturday 10 October
- Caulfield Cup, Saturday 17 October
- Cox Plate, Saturday 24 October at Flemington Racecourse
- Victoria Derby Day, Saturday 31 October at Flemington Racecourse
A heads-up for 2026: the Racing Victoria spring program confirms that the Cox Plate will be held at Flemington while The Valley is redeveloped. If you’re working from last year’s plan, you’ll end up at the wrong track.
Caulfield and Flemington are in different parts of Melbourne, so make sure you know which track your race day is at before booking accommodation or working out how to get there.
Festivals And Arena Dates
There’s plenty happening away from the sporting calendar too. Melbourne Fringe continues until 18 October, and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival runs from 16 to 25 October at venues around the city. Melbourne Fashion Week follows from 19 to 25 October. Rod Laver Arena has several multi-night runs:

- Hans Zimmer, 24 to 25 October
If your show finishes late, look at the trip back before choosing where to stay. The venue calendar and current public transport information are the best places to start.

November begins with Melbourne in full Cup Week mode. After the Cup come the Sandown 500, international cricket, film, theatre and another run of big arena shows. There’s still plenty happening once the first Tuesday of the month is over.
Melbourne Cup Carnival
The Melbourne Cup Carnival 2026 dates are:

You might be coming for Melbourne Cup Day alone or staying on for more than one day at Flemington. If you’re going twice, staying put between race days can save you another checkout and the trouble of moving your bags. Look at the total price and booking terms for your group before deciding.
We don’t currently advertise a Flemington collection. Once the official race-day transport information is available, check the trip from any home you’re considering. The closest pin on a map won’t always give you the simplest run to the racecourse.
Sandown, International Cricket And November Shows
The Penrite Oil Sandown 500 runs from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November at Sandown Raceway. It overlaps with the end of Cup Week. Flemington Racecourse is in Flemington, while Sandown Raceway is in Springvale, so each trip needs its own plan.
Cricket returns to the MCG on Saturday 21 November, when Australia plays England in the first men’s T20I of the series. Cricket Australia lists a 7.15 pm AEDT start, which leaves most of Saturday open before you head to the ground.
The Melbourne Queer Film Festival runs from 13 to 22 November, and My Fair Lady opens at the Ian Potter State Theatre on 14 November. Rod Laver Arena also hosts Daniel Caesar on 8 and 9 November, Benson Boone from 12 to 14 November and J. Cole on 28 and 29 November. Check the official festival and venue programs before locking in your dates.
Where To Stay For November Events
Cup Week takes a little more thought because we don’t currently advertise a Flemington collection. Start with the official race-day transport information, then see how the available homes fit with your plans.
For the Australia v England match at the MCG, enter your dates in our accommodation search, then compare the route from each available home. Sandown is a different trip altogether. We don’t market our inner-Melbourne homes as being near the raceway, so map out how you’ll get there before booking, particularly if the racing is the main reason for your stay.
Travelling For An Event At MSAC?
Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre has a busy spring calendar, including major swimming competitions and other sporting events. These days may not make the big Melbourne event lists, but an early warm-up or a full day of competition can shape the whole stay.

- Metro Junior District Competition and Country Junior District Competition, 21 November

An early session may make arriving the night before more practical than setting out before dawn. If you’re travelling as a family, school group or team, check the bed and bathroom setup as well as the kitchen, laundry and space you’ll have for bags and wet gear.

Melbourne can look compact on a map, but crowds, road closures and different venue entrances can add time on an event day. Start with the venue you’ll visit most or the event with the earliest start. From there, see how you’ll get there and back from any home you’re considering.

What Melbourne’s Spring Weather Means For Event Days
Melbourne spring weather can turn quickly. Long-term Bureau of Meteorology figures for Melbourne Olympic Park show average daytime temperatures rising from September to November, but those averages won’t tell you what it will do on your event day.
The practical Melbourne answer is to bring layers:
- a T-shirt or light top
- a jumper
- a rain jacket
- comfortable closed shoes
- a hat and sunscreen
- a small bag for anything you take off during the day
An early MSAC warm-up, an afternoon at the racecourse and a late finish at Rod Laver Arena can feel quite different, even in the same week. Look at the Melbourne forecast closer to the day and read the venue rules for umbrellas, bags and restricted items.
