They are all great and not recommended in any particular order. Hope this helps your visit. 1. LOCAL INNER NORTH MELBOURNE Stay local in Carlton and enjoy Melbourne’s premier inner north location with its many tourist attractions. It is an easy walk to most attractions or hire a bike using the Lime App. No visit to North Carlton is complete without taking in the delights of all the nearby restaurants and cafes for which Lygon Street is most famous. Just step out the door and you will find something that will meet your fancy. Local favourite bars include Wax Flower. This place has vinyl DJ’s every night. Enjoy while drinking cocktails or natural wine and Bar Romantica has good wines and romantic vibes! Head to Rumi or Mama Manoush for Middle Eastern food and B Easy for great grunge burgers. Local legend Gelato Messina is renowned for its gelato. For fabulous food the long standing popular Italian eateries in Lygon Street, Carlton is a must. Toto's was Australia's first pizza restaurant which opened in 1961 and is still going strong. There are also lots of great pubs to visit within easy walking distance. The Great Norther Hotel (400M) is a laid-back 1880s watering hole with a bustling beer garden, serving classic pub grub and craft beer at nearby 644 Rathdowne St, Carlton North. For shopping, grab your basics at IGA, a mere 150m away or head to the Barkly Square shopping centre with Coles and Kmart is just 500m away. Brilliant boutique clothing stores are found all along Lygon St, Sydney Road and throughout the neighbourhood. Carlton is full of historic homes dating back to the 1800's right through to the most modern architecture. Walk the streets and discover the diversity. There are many heritage listed Victorian and Edwardian homes. Make sure to walk down the lanes where you will see extensive, expensive renovations behind heritage protected street facades. You’re just steps from many superb walks and parks. The nearby Inner Circle Rail Trail for cycling or strolling in Linear Park Reserve is just 200 meters away. It extends from Rushall Station in North Fitzroy to Bowen Crescent, Princes Hill and follows the alignment of the former Inner Circle Railway. It is perfect for walking the dog. And don’t forget the Merri Creek walking trail is only 1km away! Princess Park, the popular nearby park is a major sports and recreation park offering a diverse range of activities. Perfect for a nearby walk or picnic by the ornamental lake. Play footy or run on the running track. Another local highlight is the popular Edinburgh Gardens. These famous gardens are only 1 km away. The Melbourne General Cemetery just 800 meters away was founded in 1852. It is a Carlton North feature. The historic cemetery is notably the resting place of four Prime Ministers of Australia, more than any other in Australia. The nearby University of Melbourne is a Carlton institution. The highly respected public research university was founded in 1853. It is Australia's second oldest university and the oldest in Victoria. Stroll trough and see its many historic buildings. It’s an easy walk Royal Park with the ever-popular Melbourne Zoo (2.5K). The zoo is located within Royal Park in Parkville. It is Melbourne's premier zoo with its large collection of Australian native and worldwide animals. The zoo has an extensive collection of Australian animals including koalas, kangaroos, emus, platypus, echidnas, wombats, birds and slithering snakes. Visitors must pre-book a ticket online. Everything is close by and so easily accessible. 2. MELBOURNE CITY, MELBOURNE LIFE For travellers by train Flinders Street Station is the gateway to Melbourne city. Melbournians have been meeting under the famous clocks for years. A few photos of the famous Flinders Street Station with its iconic clocks are a Melbourne must. No trip to Melbourne is complete without a ride on a tram and within the city the tram rides are free. Great coffee is a Melbourne obsession. To experience the delight, take coffee in one of the many great cafes located in Melbourne’s cool city laneways. Just walk through the city and you will find one. Along the way make sure to visit Melbourne’s historic Victorian arcades such as Royal Arcade at 355 Bourke St. where Gog and Magog strike a bell each hour to chime in the time. The Block Arcade at 25 Collins Street is another classic based on a grand arcade in Milan, Italy. If tea is your fancy visit Hopetoun Tea Rooms in the Block Arcade that has been serving tea and cakes since 1892. Melbournians have been promenading and shopping in these historic arcades for decades. Whilst in the city you can visit the city mall in Bourke Street where you will find the major department stores of Myer and David Jones. Also, in the city and well worth a visit is the stunning domed State Library in Swanston Street, the nearby Old Melbourne Gaol where bushranger Ned Kelly was locked up and you can be locked in the tiny gaol cells, the State Parliament home of the Victorian government at the top of Collins Street and the fascinating Immigration Museum at 400 Flinders Street for a reminder of Australia’s proud immigrant history. Melbourne has one UNESCO World Heritage building, the landmark Royal Exhibition Building with its stunning dome in the Carlton Gardens which opened in 1880 during the great 19th Century world exhibition era. It housed Australia’s first parliament in 1901. Next door is the Melbourne Museum with many brilliant permanent displays from dinosaurs to a giant whale skeleton, one on the human body and even an indoor rain forest. The museum showcases Australian social history, indigenous cultures, science and the environment and is the largest museum in the southern hemisphere. It is located in the Carlton Gardens in Melbourne adjacent to the Royal Exhibition Building at 11 Nicholson St, Carlton. Hours: 10am–5pm. 3. THE DOMAIN, SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE, BOTANICAL GARDENS AND THE YARRA RIVER The Domain parkland area has some of Melbourne’s best tourist attractions. The Shrine of Remembrance which commemorates the fallen in war. It is well worth the visit for the interesting exhibits and the superb 360-degree panoramic view from the upper balcony. (Entry is free). Nearby for breakfast or lunch is Kettle Black. It is a truly world class delicious dining experience. It’s at 58 Albert Road, South Melbourne. (No bookings required) Over the road from the Shrine of Remembrance is the highly regarded Jardin Tan restaurant with its delicious French/Vietnamese twist. (No bookings required). Next to it is the Children’s Garden, a hands-on gardening experience for children where they will literally get their hands dirty working with plants. Government House, the stately home of Victoria’s Governor is also located in the Domain. If the flag is flying the Governor is in residence. The stunning Victorian era Royal Botanical Gardens is special at any time of the year. This may well be the best garden you may ever see and you will get to see many Australian native plants. Walk through the Botanical Gardens to the Yarra River then cross the river and walk through Birrarung Marr to Federation Square in the city. Along the way you will pass Rod Laver Arena (Tennis), see the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (Home of AFL Football in Winter and Cricket in Summer) and the many rowing boatshed that line the riverbank. No trip to Melbourne is complete without a walk along Yarra River. 4. EVER POPULAR ST.KILDA St.Kilda is a Melbourne tourist icon. St.Kilda has the most popular beach in Melbourne and sea baths. Take the tram to St.Kilda and visit St.Kilda Pier. Walk out to the pavilion on the pier for a coffee or ice-cream. At sunset, the pier offers a stunning Melbourne city panorama. At the end of the pier you can see the Little Penguins any night at dusk when they return home to their nests in the rocks after their daily feed in the bay. (No need to go to Phillip Island!) Go a bit further to Acland Street, St,Kilda for coffee, cake, and some people gazing. This area is always jumping. For families with kids Luna Park, the historic fun park with the famous moon face entrance is a must. If you keep going along the beachfront riding path you will get to the much photographed, colourful Brighton Beach bathing boxes. 5. FABULOUS FOOD Fabulous food is everywhere in Melbourne. There is a restaurant for every cuisine and so many to great choices nearby. Tell me your taste and I will point you in the right direction. The Urban List web site provides some suggestion of the latest very best. If food is your passion, you will discover a wide variety of fresh, quality produce and specialty shopping at Queen Victoria Market. It has been operating since 1878. The Market is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Melbourne has Chinatown in Little Bourke Street in the city, Little Italy for all things Italian in Lygon Street, Carlton and fantastic Vietnamese restaurants in Victoria Street, Richmond. Melburnians are spoilt for choice. Get out and enjoy. 6. THE ARTS Melbourne is well proud of its Arts heritage. A visit to Federation Square and the Gallery Victoria is a Melbourne must. The Australian and Aboriginal collections at Gallery Victoria are outstanding collections and entry is free. The Koorie Heritage Trust’s collection of art and culture of our indigenous people is truly outstanding. If you are in to multimedia at Federation Square is the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) which is an interactive museum for digital media is well worth a visit. Walk across the road to Hosier Lane to see the famous graffiti lane and take a few photos. Graffiti artists constantly spray paint the walls covering each other’s works. This street gallery changes daily. Nearby in the Art Precinct on St. Kilda Road there are regular major exhibits at the National Gallery of Victoria. This is Australia’s oldest and largest gallery. The galleries exhibitions are world class and the building designed by Sir Roy Grounds with its water wall and moat is outstanding. Check out what’s on at the ngv web site. 7. CATCH A SHOW. Theatre, comedy, musicals, ballet, drama, operas or a concert are on virtually every night somewhere in Melbourne. Melbourne has many historical theatres including the beautiful Princess Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre and the Comedy Theatre. The nearby Malthouse Theatre, Southbank Theatre and State Theatre at the Arts Centre has performances most nights. There is always something to be found by visiting the whatson.melbourne web site. HalfTix in town is a good place to start looking for something that takes your fancy where you can get discount tickets on the day. Halftix is located in the Melbourne Town Hall Administration Building on the corner of Collins and Swanston Street, in the city. Open 11am to 6pm. You do not have to pay to see great performances with many buskers to be found along the banks of the Yarra River in Southbank or in the City Mall in Bourke Street. 8. MELBOURNE SPORTS MANIA Sport is a Melbourne institution. Melbourne is the only city in the world with 5 international standard sporting facilities right on the fringes of the city. These include the Melbourne Cricket Ground known as “The G” can hold over 90,000 spectators. It held the Olympics in 1956 and holds the Australian Football League finals in September, Docklands Stadium, Rod Laver Arena, Hisence Arena and Olympic Park in Melbourne Park. The biggest sporting event in Australia is the Australian Tennis Open Tennis held annually at the Rod Laver Arena in late January. In 2019, more than 780,000 fans attended the two-week tennis grand event. The Australian Grand Prix is held in nearby Albert Park in March. You can walk there and see the pit buildings. There is also the MotoGP in November for motor bike lovers. During winter, go and see an Australian Rules Football match which is on most weekends. Nearby is a domed stadium where you can watch a game whatever the weather. The finals are in September. Spring in Melbourne is horse racing with the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November. Dress up and enjoy the festivities. If you are really in to sport the Australian Sports Museum at the MCG which features Australia’s Olympic history is well worth a visit. Surfing is an Australia pastime with the nearest surf beaches at Torquay on the Surf Coast or Gunnamatta on the Mornington Peninsula. 9. AUSSIE ANIMALS A visit to the Melbourne Zoo in Parkville to see Australia’s iconic animals is another Melbourne must. You’ll see many of Australia’s unique animals including kangaroos, koalas, wombats, platypus, echidnas, emus, eagles and all those nasty poisonous snakes like the eastern brown snake, coastal taipan and common death adder. Now don’t, worry you will not see any nasty snakes slithering around Melbourne. Visitors must pre-book a ticket online. Further out of town is the Healsville Sanctuary which has all the Australian animals in a natural outdoor setting. Well worth the day trip. For Australian sea life visit the Melbourne Aquarium on the corner of King St and Flinders St, Melbourne. For farm animals visit the Collingwood Children’s Farm where you can see, pat and feed farm animals. 10. SERIOUS SHOPPING If shopping is your go and you are in to fashion a visit to Chapel Street in South Yarra to watch the passing parade is a Melbourne must. Saturday and Sunday are a scene. If it is a bargain you are after head to DFO South Wharf where there are many brand outlet stores with local and international brands offering great savings on fashion, homeware and more plus a popular food court. The premier Melbourne shopping centre experience is a visit to Chadstone Shopping Centre. It is a fair drive there but is massive and every brand is there. This is the shopper’s paradise. It is at 1341 Dandenong Road, Chadstone. OUT OF TOWN OUTINGS (From Nearest to Farthest) 1. The Dandenong Ranges (1.25 hours) is where you will see massive Australian gum trees and bush in a natural setting. Visit Sherbrook Forest and for lunch The Piggery. If you are feeling energetic walk the Thousand Steps hill climb. 2. Yarra Valley (1.5 hours) has great wineries, the Healsville Sanctuary with its native Australian animals in a bush setting and the TarraWarra Museum of Art and winery. 3. Ballarat (1.5hours) is a boom time gold rush period town. With its stunning historic buildings, Victoria’s most popular tourist attraction Sovereign Hill, a reconstructed gold rush town and the Ballarat Wildlife Park it is well worth the drive. 4. Mornington Peninsula (1.5 hours) is Melbourne’s summer retreat with wineries around Red Hill and Portsea’s with its bay and surf beaches which is the summer playground of Melbourne’s rich and famous. 4. The nearby Dandenong Ranges (1.25 hours) is where you will see massive Australian gum trees and bush in a natural setting. Visit Sherbrook Forest and for lunch The Piggery. If you are feeling energetic walk the Thousand Steps hill climb. 5. Drive along the Great Ocean Road (2.5 hours) to see the stunning cliff tops, surf beaches and Twelve Apostles. Bells Beach is the home of the Rip Curl Pro Surfing Competition. Start early and drive the Great Ocean Road with sunset at the Twelve Apostles.
